4 Natural Ways to Cover Grey Hairs


The decision to sport a salt and pepper hairstyle is a personal choice and so is the decision to cover one’s greys. Greying of hair can occur not only as part of ageing but also prematurely.   1. Black Tea

The abundance of tannic acid in black tea darkens your hair when applied over time. The antioxidants in it attributes a natural lustre to the hair and promotes healthy hair growth.

What you need:

  • 2 tbsp black tea leaves
  • 2 cups water


Boil the water with black tea leaves and allow it to steep until the water reduces its volume to half the original amount. After cooling the solution, apply it to your hair. The black tea solution should be left in for an hour before rinsing it off.


This process should be repeated once every fortnight.

  1. Henna Coffee Pack

Henna is known for its colouring properties. Because of their versatile qualities, henna leaves are widely used as remedies for grey hair, dandruff and hairfall.

What you need

  • 2 cups fresh henna leaves (use 1 cup pure henna powder if fresh leaves are not available)
  • 3 tsp amla powder
  • 2 tbsp curd
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 2 tsp coffee powder
  • 1 cup water


Boil a cup of water with coffee powder to make concentrated black coffee. While the coffee cools down, grind the henna leaves to make a paste. If you use pure henna powder, mix it with some water to create a thick paste.  Add black coffee, amla powder, curd and lemon juice to the paste and mix well. Let the hair pack rest for five to six hours. You can also let it rest overnight and use it the next day. Apply the pack to your hair and leave it on for two to three hours before washing it out.


This process should be repeated once a month.

  1. Curry Leaves Oil

Curry leaves not only delay greying but also enable the restoration of melanin, the pigment that gives colour to your hair, in the hair follicles. Being rich in Vitamin B and beta-carotene they are beneficial in preventing hair loss and improving scalp health.

What you need:

  • 1 fresh cup curry leaves
  • 3 tbsp coconut oil


In a vessel, heat the oil and curry leaves till the former boils. Upon the formation of a black residue, cool the oil and apply it to your hair. Ensure that the curry leaves oil is applied thoroughly to your hair and scalp. Wait for an hour before washing your hair.


This process should be repeated thrice a week. You can prepare the curry leaves oil in large quantities and store it in a dry container.

  1. Rinse with Potato Peels

The starch in potatoes acts as a colouring agent that adds pigment to the grey hairs, thereby camouflaging them. This process yields results within a week or two and is an excellent form of masking grey hair.  Potato peels also make your hair shine naturally in addition to darkening it.

What you need:

  • The skin of 10 potatoes
  • 1-litre water


The potato peels should be boiled in water for 25 minutes or until the latter becomes starchy. After switching off the stove, allow the solution to steep further for 15 to 20 minutes before straining it. Rinse your hair with this potato peel water thoroughly, completely coating all strands of your hair. Gently massage your scalp as you pour the solution on your head. Do not rinse your hair with water - leave it on for 10 minutes and then dry your hair with a towel.


This process should be repeated twice a week for desirable results.
