Sperm Count
Low sperm count means that the semen or fluid that you ejaculate during an orgasm contains less number of sperms than normal. This condition is known as oligospermia. An individual is considered to be suffering from oligospermia if his sperm count is lesser than 15 million sperm per milliliter of semen. Low sperm count decreases the odds of the ability to impregnate. Although the odds are low, oligospermic men still are able to father a child.
The most common sign of oligospermia is the inability to aide in conceiving a child. The signs are dilated veins, anatomical obstructive conditions that blocks the passage of sperms, hormonal imbalance, inherited chromosomal disorders etc. It may also include decreased sexual libido(urge to have intercourse), erectile dysfunction, pain and swelling or a lump in the testicle, reduced facial and bodily hair which is also the most common reason for hormone imbalance.
How to tackle reduced sperm count?
Semen Analysis: A low sperm count is diagnosed as part of a semen analysis test. Sperm count is generally determined by examining semen under a microscope to see how many sperm appear within squares on a grid pattern.
Scrotal Ultrasound: This test uses high frequency sound waves to observe the testicles and the supporting structures to find out abnormalities.
Hormone testing: Tests are conducted to check the level of hormones produced by the pituitary gland and testicles. As they play an important role in sexual urge and sperm development.
Post ejaculation urine analysis: Urine test is performed immediately after ejaculation to find out if the sperm is traveling backward into the bladder instead of out. This condition is known as retrograde ejaculation.
Genetic Tests: If all the results come negative, genetic tests are carried out to find out if Y chromosome is showing any changes.
Testicular biopsy: It is done to find out the amount of sperm that is collected in the testicle. This test diagnosis if there is a blockage in the structural anatomy of the male reproductive system.
Anti Sperm antibodies test: It is a test that shows the presence of damaging antibodies in the blood that attacks the individual’s sperm which in turn reduces the sperm count.
