Are you unable to sleep well at night? Do you constantly find yourself snoring? Do you feel immense irritation in your throat while you are asleep? If your answer to all the three questions mentioned above is yes, then you might be suffering from Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). In simple words, Obstructive Sleep Apnea is a condition in which the breathing starts and stops while a person is sleeping due to the blockage of the nasal and throat airways. Think of it like your own body choking you while you are fast asleep. Sounds dangerous, doesn't it?

OSA is the most common sleep breathing disorder and can affect people of any age and gender. OSA makes a person prone to headaches, fatigue, mood swings, daytime sleeping, irritability, sore throat, depression and on goes the list. Many people who are suffering from OSA rely on a CPAP mask or other similar devices. However, if sleeping with a machine stuck on you isn’t something that you can get used to, here are some ways that will help you get rid of, or at least minimize OSA making every night, a good night for you.

Regular exercise: Researchers tend to believe that there is a strong relationship between excess weight and OSA. This is because obesity can lead to a number of breathing and cardiovascular disorders which in turn causes OSA. A study showed that people who were suffering from obesity and OSA showed little or no signs of OSA once they got rid of their excess weight.

Check for underlying health conditions: OSA could be the consequence of various underlying health conditions like hypothyroidism, diabetes, obesity, etc. Treating your existing health conditions might help you get rid of OSA and therefore, it is recommended that you consult a doctor to check for underlying health conditions.

Give up tobacco and alcohol: Smoking or chewing tobacco swells up the upper airway of your throat and drinking decreases the muscle tone in the back of the throat. The above mentioned consequences contribute to an array of cardiovascular diseases making OSA worse.

Consult a sleep expert: Little tricks and techniques in bed go a long way in dealing with OSA. You might not realize but a couple of changes in bed might be the solution to your sleeping disorder. Seek an expert’s help to maintain a healthy sleeping routine, bed hygiene and to find out which positions help best in minimizing OSA.
