First and foremost, as much as I love using the word ‘fart’ (C’mon! Even you think it’s funny), it is not an accepted medical term for passing gas. Excess gas in the intestines is termed as ‘flatulence.’ The word comes from the Old English term ‘Feortan’ meaning to ‘break wind.’

Coming back! You might think that the only two things that farting.. sorry, flatulence brings along is ‘a funny sound’ and ‘a foul smell.’

But wait! There’s a third thing: Flatulence brings along with it multiple health benefits and this article will tell you all about it.

Before you turn down this article on the basis of how gross it is, let me tell you that passing gas is a totally natural bodily function and it’s indeed a necessary and normal part of digesting food.

Now let’s talk about the benefits of leaving love (smelly love) in the air:

1. It reduces bloating: Bloating is a general and temporary swelling in the abdominal area. Though it is not something to worry about, it causes great discomfort. It mostly happens due to water retention or gas. Letting the gas out ensures that bloating goes out of the way.

2. It helps balance your diet: Flatulence helps your system figure out what food items it actually needs to maintain a balanced diet as consumption of different food items produce different kinds of gas. For eg: If you don’t let one loose very often, you might need to include more fibers in your diet. Quite the dietician, I must say!

3. It ensures healthy gut bacteria:  Purna Kashyap, a gastroenterologist at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota says that “Eating foods that cause gas is the only way for the microbes in the gut to get nutrients,” and f we didn’t feed them carbohydrates, it would be harder for them to live in our gut.” Pat yourself on the back for taking one for the team.

4. It boosts colon health: A bottom burp might not be a good cologne but it’s good for your colon. Holding in gas might lead to serious obstruction in the colon which can eventually lead to the bursting of your colon.

5. The smell is actually healthy: Before you question this point, hear us out. When we pass gas, a little something called hydrogen sulfide is released which safeguards you against future illness. Hydrogen sulfide while harmful in excess, can help prevent strokes, heart attack and cell damage when produced in small amounts.

And to top it all of, relief. Nothing, nothing, and nothing can compare to the relief you get after you let one rip. Once you let one out, you know that nothing and no one can bring you down.
