Our packed routines often make us forget that the most basic and critical of all our requirements is proper nutrition! Eating right is even more important than exercise, and the combination of a balanced diet along with the right amount of exercise can do wonders for the body. While most of us know and understand the importance of nutrition, very few are actually able to make conscious food choices. On the other hand are a section of people who are unable to afford even a simple healthy meal a day. Either ways, the country is reeling under a nutritional deficit, and the significance of the National Nutrition Week cannot be undermined!

Importance of the National Nutrition Week

The National Nutrition Week was initiated in 1982 to address the critical issue of malnutrition in the country. The Ministry of Women and Child Development, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and various other NGOs conduct mass nutrition awareness campaigns, food training camps and more to help spread the message of the importance of a nutritious diet, while also running schemes that ensure that appropriate nutrition reaches the masses; especially to the lower income groups.

Are you eating a balanced diet?

A balanced diet helps to provide the right amount of nutrients to the body. It should ideally contain around 50-60% of the total calories from carbohydrates, 10-15% from protein and 20-30% from fat. Additionally it should include vitamins, minerals, anti-oxidants and fibres. The nutritional requirements of the body vary based on gender, age-group and special needs. For eg: pregnant women, people who are physically active and young children will often have a higher requirement of certain nutrients. Taking care of one’s nutrition has plenty of long-term health benefits. Planning the right diet can promote all round health and also save you numerous trips to the doctor!
