You know you’re a good parent when you find yourself looking into your baby’s dirty diaper and analyzing it for the longest time ever. The way people say ‘You can tell a lot about a person by the company he keeps’, just like that ‘You can tell a lot about your baby by having a look inside his dirty diapers.’

Colors always seem to symbolize something; like black for evil, red for hunger, white for peace and on goes the list. Similarly, various colors symbolize various things when it comes to baby poop. Read on to find out about the different types of baby poop, what they mean and when it’s time to visit the pediatrician.

Greenish black: This is the color that you’ll come across in the first few days of your child’s birth. Though it may look like something that you need to worry about, it’s absolutely not. This kind of poop is called ‘meconium’ which is made up of mucus, amniotic fluids, skin cells, etc.

Mustard Yellow: If you ever find this color inside your baby’s diaper, be assured that things are going the right way. This color is usually the result of exclusive breastfeeding and is considered normal.

Tan/Peach: This poop color is considered to be normal when a baby is feeding on formula and a few solids. There’s nothing to worry about if the motion is smooth and consistent.

Lime Green: Lime Green poop can be an indicator of digestion issues. It symbolizes a foremilk/hindmilk imbalance, lactose intolerance or a stomach bug. However, coming across this color in your baby’s diapers once or twice is completely alright but if it keeps happening over an extended period of time, it is recommended that you visit a pediatrician.

Brown: As you keep adding more and more solids into your baby’s diet, you will start coming across brown poop. Just like in adults, for babies, brown poop is ideal and completely normal.

Black: Black poop could mean that your baby has ingested a little blood through your cracked or bleeding nipples. Though it is not really harmful, it can cause a teeny tiny bit of indigestion.

Red: As dangerous as it sounds, red poop is not always serious. It is a usual occurrence after eating beets. However, red specks in poop can sometimes also mean a dairy intolerance, tearing of skin due to constipation and a bacterial infection. A visit to the pediatrician is recommended in the latter cases.
