A makeup brush is nothing less than a magic wand. A few strokes here and a few strokes here and you can change the way you look entirely. Makeup tutorials are taking over video sharing platforms by storm and more and more people are relying on it to conceal skin problems and enhance the way they look but does makeup come with zero consequences?
Let’s go back in time; back to the time when grandmothers and mothers used to warn their children about how using makeup can hamper the skin and make a person look all old and grey. At one point, these warnings felt like tricks to keep the people from using makeup but with more research around makeup, it really makes ask - "Can makeup actually make a person look old?"
The answer is yes. Sure, makeup is a marvelous tool to step up your beauty game but if you choose the wrong approach towards applying makeup, it can give you a lifetime of skin problems like which can make you look older than you actually are.
Under what circumstances can makeup make you look old? Let’s find out:
Unsuitable ingredients: Certain ingredients that are used in cosmetic products can work against your skin. Ingredients like propylene, zinc oxide and dimethicone which are used very commonly in makeup products can create a thin layer-like build up on the skin. This layer clogs the pores of the skin trapping sweat and various oils under the skin which can in turn cause loss of skin tone, increased elasticity of skin and other signs of aging.
Rough handling: Your skin is extremely delicate and therefore, any skin product, be it moisturizing lotion, should be applied with ease and care. Rough handling of skin while applying cosmetic products can majorly irritate the skin which can result in short-term skin problems like pimples, blemishes, blackheads, etc. Wrinkles, fine lines, blemishes, etc are some of the long-term consequences of applying makeup roughly.
Use of talc-based and mineral-based makeup: Talc-based makeup can dry out the skin which can lead to early and rapid wrinkling of the skin. Dryness of the skin makes pores and fine lines easily visible which can make a person look older than they actually are. Mineral-based makeup containing bismuth oxychloride can cause peeling of the skin which can make the skin to look old.
Using makeup as a sunscreen: Using makeup for sun protection can obviously hamper a person’s skin as the ingredients vary majorly. Some people have the misconception that since makeup contains SPF-15, it can provide complete protection from the sun. According to San Antonio Dermatologist Vivian Bucay, MD. “Makeup can cause premature aging of the skin if people rely on it as their means for sun protection. If a woman uses an SPF 15 makeup, she needs to apply 2 teaspoons to achieve the SPF 15 protection.” That way, a 28g container of makeup will last only for three to four days.
Applying excess makeup: It is a well-known fact that anything if used in excess, can cause damage and the same holds true for makeup. The use of excess makeup regularly can clog the skin pores which can lead to various skin problems. Clogged pores restrict the skin from breathing which kills the moisture on the skin, thus making it look pale and dull. Excess makeup can also cause uneven tanning of skin which can make the skin look unhealthy and old. When it comes to applying excess makeup, Dr. Vivian Bucay says, “Women sometimes forget that less is more as we age. Makeup should enhance our skin, not mask it. Too much makeup emphasizes fine lines, wrinkles, and pores.”
Well, I guess that our mothers and grandmothers were right about this one! However, it is never too late to choose the right makeup products and take the right precautions while applying makeup and protect your skin from falling prey to signs of aging.
