Summer Safety

Soaring temperatures can drain your energy and also pave the way for a series of ailments. But here’s how you can stay on top of your game and make the best of your time in the sun. All it takes is a little lifestyle adjustment, minor changes in your diet, and a few precautionary measures against common ailments during the season.

Common Health Concerns during Summer

  1. Heat Stroke: A condition where your body overheats as a result of prolonged exposure to the heat, or in case of physical exertion in soaring temperatures.
  2. Heat Cramps: Manifests itself as muscle spasms as a result of loss of large amount of salt and water during exercise or any other physically challenging task. The cramps can be experienced in the abdomen, arms or calves.
  3. Dehydration/ Heat Exhaustion: Typically experienced when your body doesn't get as much water as it needs.
  4. Rosacea (red skin): Stinging and burning of your skin, accompanied by redness on your nose, cheeks, chin, and forehead.
  5. Sunburn: Caused by the ultraviolet rays from the sun, it can cause the skin to blister.
  6. Prickly Heat: Also known as heat rash, it is experienced when sweat becomes trapped under the skin, leading to a break out of itchy rashes.
  7. Food Poisoning: Increased number of food poisoning incidents is witnessed in summer months as bacteria grow faster in warmer weather.

Essential Summer Care Tips

  1. Stay adequately hydrated at all times (drink a minimum of 4 litres of fluid). Consume plenty of citrus fruits like oranges and lemon, which are the excellent sources of electrolytes. There’s also nothing like tender coconut water for an immediate natural fix in case of dehydration.
  2. Wear light coloured and loose fitting clothes (cotton clothes are the best). Lighter colours reflect light, which means you will not feel the heat as much. Loose clothes allow easy circulation of air and help cool you down as well.
  3. Take cold showers. This improves blood circulation and helps you shake off the exhaustion you feel due to the heat.
  4. Eat easily digestible foods and include a good amount of fresh fruits and raw veggies with high water content. Avoid spicy, oily and salty foods as these require more water to be digested.
  5. Cover up using a sunscreen, hat, scarf or umbrella whenever you step out. These also protect your skin from sunburn, freckles and heat rashes.
  6. Cut down on strenuous exercises; you may experience muscle pain or spasms in the abdomen, arms or legs due to depletion of salt and water.
  7. Do not leave your kids or pets in a closed car. Even with the air conditioner on, the temperature inside a car can rise dangerously in no time.
  8. When we sweat, we lose out on essential vitamins and minerals. Load up on vitamins A, C, and E as they help protect against skin allergies and heat strokes.
