Everyone wants good hair days but little do they know that ‘good hair days’ come at a price. Good hair days need a lot of care and nourishment and given our lifestyle and busy schedules, taking out time separately for hair care is a little difficult. Now obviously, every person has different hair and therefore, the hair care routine varies accordingly. However, there are some ‘works-for-all’ tips that are imperative for maintaining healthy hair.

The way you wash your hair plays a key role in determining the health of your hair. In this article, we will focus on the fundamentals of a good hair wash routine. Keep these points in mind to ensure that every day is a good hair day.

Did you know? The hair above the surface of our hair is dead. The living part of hair lies beneath the scalp and therefore it is of utmost importance to take care of your scalp.

Don’t take head baths every day: No matter the hair type, your scalp has essential natural oils which keep the hair healthy and moisturized. Taking a head bath every day strips the hair off the natural oils which makes them more vulnerable to dryness, dandruff and damage.

According to Steve Rowbottom, co-director of Westrow, “Over-washing can be damaging for your hair, especially if it is bleached, coloured, has been chemically treated or is naturally very dry or porous. When you wash your hair every day it strips away the natural oils and proteins that you need to keep your hair and scalp healthy, so try to limit hair washing to three times a week if you can.”

Avoid taking a head bath with hot water: Certain natural oils in the hair act as a natural conditioner. It is always recommended to wash your hair with lukewarm water in order to retain the natural shine of your hair.

Always deep condition your hair: Choose the right conditioner depending on your hair type and always deep condition your hair to add moisture and strength to your hair. If you have no time constraints, let the conditioner stay on your hair for at least 30 minutes a sit allows the hair to soak the moisture.

According to celebrity hair stylist Ted Gibson, “I believe it’s important to use leave-in conditioners and also not to shampoo so often. Rinse it if you want to but don’t necessarily shampoo it.”

Speaking about the right way to apply conditioner, stylist Kerrie Urban says, “Conditioner only needs to go on the mid-lengths and ends of your hair. Try not to put the conditioner on the roots as it will cause your scalp to get greasy faster.”

Let your hair dry naturally: It is a known fact that blow drying causes damage to your hair. The heat from the dryer can severely damage the hair follicles which in turn causes dry and damaged hair. Avoid using blow dryers as much as possible, however, if you need to use a hair dryer, opt for a dryer that can be adjusted to a cooler setting.
