Psychology & Psychiatry

Psychology is the study of behavior and mind, embracing all aspects of human experience. Psychiatry is a branch of medicine devoted to the diagnosis, prevention, study and treatment of mental disorders. These include various abnormalities that are affective, behavioural, cognitive and perceptual.

Depression and Anxiety

Depression and anxiety are different conditions that commonly occur together and have similar treatments. Feeling down occasionally is a normal response to stressful situations.
Stress is a person’s way of responding to a challenge or threat. When you are in a demanding situation, your nervous system responds by releasing stress hormones, including adrenaline and cortisol.

Stress and Anger Management

Anger management is training for temper control and is the skill of remaining calm and composed. Anger is frequently a result of frustration, or of feeling blocked or thwarted from doing what is important to us. Anger can also be a defensive response to underlying fear or feelings of vulnerability or powerlessness. Personality has to do with individual differences among people in behaviour patterns, cognition and emotion.

Personality and Habits

A habit is a routine of behavior that is repeated regularly and tends to occur unconsciously. Habitual behavior often goes unnoticed in persons exhibiting it, because a person does not need to engage in self-analysis when undertaking routine tasks. Habits are sometimes compulsory. Habit formation is the process by which new behaviours become automatic. Old habits are hard to break and new habits are hard to form because the behavioural patterns we repeat are imprinted in our neural pathways, but it is possible to form new habits through repetition.

Life Transition

Life transition is the matter to be handled well. You are said to be in a transitional phase when you face the crossroads of any sort in life; and this can be a difficult and challenging experience. Life transitions can arise from situations such as death, marriage, divorce, parenthood and similar life changing experiences.

ADHD

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a psychiatric disorder of the neurodevelopmental type. It is characterized by problems in paying attention, excessive activity, or difficulty controlling behavior that is not appropriate for a person’s age. These symptoms begin by age six to twelve, and are present for more than six months. In children, problems paying attention may result in poor school performance.

Post Trauma

Post trauma is a mental condition that can develop after a person is exposed to a traumatic event, such as sexual assault, warfare, traffic collisions, or other threats on a person’s life. It can also become a mental disorder. Symptoms may include disturbing thoughts, feelings, or dreams related to the events, mental or physical distress to trauma-related cues, attempts to avoid trauma-related cues, alterations in how a person thinks and feels, and increased arousal. These symptoms last for more than a month after the event. Young children are less likely to show distress but instead may express their memories through play.

Abuse – Domestic, drug, sexual

Abuse is the improper usage or treatment of a person, often to unfairly or improperly to gain benefit. Abuse can come in many forms, such as: physical or verbal maltreatment, injury, assault, violation, rape, unjust practices; crimes, or other types of aggression. Domestic abuse can be broadly defined as any form of abusive behaviour by one or both partners in an intimate relationship, such as marriage, cohabitation, family, dating, or even friends. It is important to remember that abuse is always intentional, and cannot happen by accident. Drug abuse, also known as substance abuse, is a patterned use of a drugs in which the user consumes the drug in amounts or through methods without medical supervision or approval. Sexual abuse, also referred to as molestation, is forcing undesired sexual behavior by one person upon another.
