A study conducted by the University Hospital of Lausanne, Switzerland made a startling discovery- the risk of heart problems in people reduced in people who nap 1-2 times a week! For the study, the control group comprised 3462 people who had never been diagnosed with any kind of heart disorder. Their napping patterns were observed for 5 years. Some snoozed in the afternoon and some did not. During those 5 years, there were 155 incidents of fatal as well as non-fatal incidents of heart-related medical emergencies among the control group. What the scientists concluded from the data was that the risk of heart problems in people who nap 1-2 times a week was much lower than the ones who do not sleep at all in the afternoon. However, there is a catch. According to a study published by the University of Japan, a J shaped curve links naps to heart disorders. That means that while a little napping can benefit your heart, overdoing it can turn the tables. You need power naps i.e, naps that do not exceed 30 minutes, to ward off coronary disorders. But, snooze longer and you will just make your heart more susceptible to the risk factors of coronary ailments.Experts believe the reason that your heart loves short naps is because naps can - to a great extent - reduce stress and anxiety- your heart’s worst enemies. Night-time sleep can be disturbed owing to insomnia, frequent awakenings, REM sleep arousals, breathing trouble etc. Sleep interruptions increase heart disorder risks. If such people take a quick power nap the next day, they will feel a lot more rested and their heart will thank them for it.Doctors issue a word of caution: naps should be restricted to 20-30 minutes. But, if you can’t snap out of your sleep in that time, then make sure you prolong your nap to at least 90 minutes. Because after 30 minutes, you could be entering a deep sleep state. Frequently jolting out of this phase of sleep can be detrimental to your heart. Moreover, you will end up feeling groggy and disoriented. Your first sleep cycle will end in about 90 minutes. That means after an hour and a half you will again be sleeping light, which is a good time to wake up.
