Table of Contents
Watching a baby grow is literally one of the most fascinating things you’ll come across. Every next moment has a surprise in store. Hundreds of physical and developmental changes take place in your baby’s body on a day to day basis.
So much happening simultaneously at the same time, inevitably, one of your major concerns become keeping a track of all these developmental and physical changes.
This is when growth charts come to the rescue.
What is a baby growth chart?
The World Health organization after studying babies from different parts of the world create a list of growth parameters for parents to monitor and compare. The growth parameters applicable for a newborn are as follows:
Weight.
Height.
Head Circumference.
Body Mass Index. (BMI)
The values of the above parameters are different for boys and girls. The values for these parameters have a upper and lower limit in order for you to track and monitor your baby’s growth accordingly. The upper and lower limit suggest that these values vary across different countries and babies.
The growth charts for the 4 important parameters are shown below:
It is recommended that you measure these parameters of your child from time to time and compare them with the values specified in the growth chart. To avoid confusion and misinterpretation, it is ideal to seek the help of a pediatrician or your family doctor. They can help you further by providing you with a growth curve and other important aspects of the same.
When should you start worrying?
Growth rate is different for different babies and that’s why, this part leaves the parent in a fix. In some of the cases where the baby’s growth don’t match the values in the flow chart, there are sudden growth spurts which make up for it. Therefore, it is recommended that you analyse your baby’s growth over a span of 3-6 months period. Over 3-6 months, if your baby’s growth hasn’t budged much or don’t match up to the values in the growth chart, then it is strongly recommended that you seek the help of a pediatrician to analyse your child’s health and growth.
However, it is important to note that in some cases, genetics come into play. Therefore, it is important to consider all the aspects (including hormonal) before jumping into conclusions about your baby’s growth.
