Headache is defined as a dull throbbing pain in the head, back of the eyes, back of head or side of head.
Like any other pain, headaches usually have an underlying reason. Some headaches have no underlying reason and are called primary headaches.
Primary headaches are caused by hyperactivity of pain sensitive structures on or inside the skull. Some primary headaches are genetic.
Chemical imbalance in the brain, nerve irritation, arterial compression, muscular involvement are some of the reasons for primary headaches.
The most common primary headaches are as follows:
- Cluster Headaches
- Migraine with aura
- Stress headache
- Hunger headache
- Anxiety headache
Some primary headaches can be triggered by lifestyle behaviors like:
- Stress
- Alcohol consumption especially wine
- Posture problems
- Skipping of meals
Secondary Headaches
A secondary headache is a symptom of a disease that can aggravate the pain sensitive structures of the skull.The possible causes of secondary headaches include:
- Acute Sinusitis
- Stroke
- Brain Aneurysm
- Brain tumor
- Meningitis
- Carbon Monoxide poisoning
- Middle ear infection
- Locked jaw pain radiating to temple
- Hypertension
- Dental infections
- Concussions
- Dehydration
- Hangovers
- Trigeminal Neuralgia
- Toxoplasmosis
- Thunderclap headaches
- Spinal infections
- Dural Hematomas
- Hemorrhage
- When the frequency of headaches is increasing.
When to see a doctor:
- When the headache worsens with consumption of over the counter drugs.
- When the headache is unusually more severe than normal.
