Eating disorder is a fast emerging condition in India. Persistent eating patterns that have a negative impact on an individual’s health is called eating disorder. There are different types of eating disorder namely:

Bulimia Nervosa: It is commonly known as bulimic eating disorder.
Bulimia nervosa is a serious disorder where an individual experiences bouts of binge eating and lack of control over their eating. While experiencing these episodes, they usually over indulge in food and eventually try to get rid of the consumed food by trying to force a gag reflex resulting in expulsion of consumed food. This action is mainly caused due to extreme guilt and the shame of overindulging in food, etc. Bulimic individuals are overly concerned of their body weight, shape and almost always judge themselves severely.

Anorexia Nervosa: It is a life threatening disorder characterised by abnormally low body weight. Individuals suffering from anorexia use extreme efforts to control their weight and shape. It often includes fatal actions like keeping away from solid food, consuming very little or no food, etc.These individuals go through unusual methods like starvation, forced vomiting, etc to reduce weight even when they are underweight or malnourished.

Restrictive food intake disorder: This condition is characterised by the inability to enjoy the consumption of food, avoiding consumption of food or showing a lack of interest in the consumption of food. Individuals avoid certain types of food that appalls them. It can range from aversion to a certain type of food, color of food, smell of certain food items, etc

Binge Eating Disorder: It is common condition which almost every individual is aware of. This condition is characterized as inability to stop consumption of food even after attaining satiety (eating after feeling full). Individuals usually get more than the required amount of nutrition for the day which can possibly have negative consequences. It can be triggered due to emotional stress, defeat, humiliation etc.

Symptoms to be aware of:

  • Adopting an overly strict diet.
  • Constant complaints about body fat, shape, etc.
  • Excessively focusing on flaws of the body.
  • Inability to focus on anything but the flaws of body.
  • A Sudden disinterest in eating food.
  • A Sudden change in the consumption of food.
  • Excessive consumption of high carb high fat content food.
  • Complaints of food being unsatisfactory.
